I was in management with Cracker Barrel in Dayton, OH and quit after 10 months because I just cannot be the heartless *** corporate requires managers to be. I'm no pushover, but I do not believe in being a slavedriver, and that's what they want.

We are taught during training that the majority of the employees we will be managing are uneducated and behave like children, and must be treated like children in order to maximize their value. Managers can't have anyone over $9 per hour, and if you start creeping close to $9 per hour, they have a whole list of things they can do to set you up to fail so you will never again meet the requirements for a raise. I've work for several corporate restaurant chains, and corruption exists in all of them, but there are none so corrupt as Cracker Barrel. I will never dine in a Cracker Barrel again because of it.

That pains me too, because I loved Cracker Barrel as a kid, and have many fond memories of going there with my late grandparents.

But after seeing what goes on there outside of public view, I will never give another dime to that company again. It is wage slavery, pure and simple.

Location: Miamisburg, Ohio

...unfortunately, what you've said is true of Cracker Barrel employment practices. I can attest to it after my own experience as a Retail Associate over the past year and a half now.

I had to fight to reach my Par 4 with a narcissistic manager who was '*** bent' on seeing me fail from the onset sabotaging all efforts on my part to progress. She informed me after an evaluation grade of 90% that I missed my Par 4 by 5 points for personal reasons of her own, and that I would have to wait for 6 mos. for re-evaluation. I was later informed by restaurant management that I was, in fact, time qualified as well as having aced my test to receive my Par 4.

I have a strong work ethic after 35 years in private corporation; caregiving my mom with Parkinson's 5+ years full time after last attorney employer retired. Consequently, I found myself at Cracker Barrel after having no success in the job market after mom passed.

By the way, thanks for clearing up some confusion for me. I've been feeling pretty beat up lately with constant barrage of demeaning behavior from this manager who blames for inexplicable conversion drop when all expectations are met by me/us to ensure profitability.

Now, tasks have multiplied, 1-man shifts have been implemented, crazy hours/hours cut, and more employed--with the newer treated better and pitted against older employees.

I can only surmise this is because this manager won't get her $1,000 bonus that she's grown accustomed to getting in the past quarters. Additionally, amenities have been dropped, i.e., gift wrap, bundling/baskets, merchandise holds, etc.
